regenerative medicine with embryonic cells

Hello,
We have heard debates on TV and read in lots of articles in newspapers stuff on regenerative medicine using embryonic cells and cells from the own individual.
Can you please explain to me in a simple way what this sort of medicine is all about, and what is the real status of this technology?
